So, in my last article I said “Leadership is not about you” but that’s not necessarily true. It’s about you as far as the environment you create, culture you aspire to and the tone you set for other to lead, make mistakes, learn and choose a path to be successful. Everybody defines leadership differently, but I really like the way John C Maxwell defines it, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” However, in my humble opinion to lead you must be strong enough to follow and to follow as a leader you had better have created an environment of mentoring and allowing for failure so as to promote learning and evolving. Failure is a pathway to knowledge, experience and growth that leads to success. You must be confident in yourself and willing to fail to push yourself beyond your current comfort zone and raise your level of tolerance and uncomfortably. It’s in this zone that you cultivate a mental and physical toughness that doesn’t fear failure but embraces it to promote a mindset of Leading With Action, making mistakes, learning from them moving forward and winning! If you are not willing to fail and take calculated risks, then how can you be pioneering? How can you lead? And, how can you truly be successful in all aspects of your life? Leaders help each other to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something unique. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organization that is dynamic, stimulating, and inspirational. Everyone just doesn’t want to lead, evolve or win and though I may not understand that and I certainly can’t comprehend that level of apathy in my core values, I do recognize it is a reality. But, in the end I just had to realize that you can’t save everyone, and everyone must make the decision that is best for them and their family All you can do is set the tone for those who truly want to have the honor and privilege to lead, then give them the opportunity to make mistakes, learn, grow and win! Lead With Action!
